These days, I have been wholly made up of fire.
Always devouring, burning, a face that says YOU WILL LOOK AT ME. YOU WILL NOT IGNORE ME,
blazing through the city in devil-red high heels.
Lately, though, I’ve been made of water.
I almost forgot what it meant to be soft. To blend into the walls. To paint gentleness on the streets.
When I was a child, I was only an ocean.
I started catching on fire the more people made me feel invisible,
the more they made me hurt.
There’s a balance, I believe. Your heart has to be part fiery, part soft.
You say, look at me. You say, fear me. You say, you should.
But you also say, I love you. You also say, I’ll lift you up.
You also say, I’ll help you heal. I’ll help you grow.
